South Africa’s Bafana Bafana team secured a 2-1 victory over Benin in their quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Percy Tau scored the first goal in over two years for Percy and Khuliso Mudau scored the national team’s maiden strike. The hosts played well, but had to wait until the 33rd minute to test goalkeeper Saturnin Allagbe again.
Bafana Bafana claimed a second goal in injury time at the end of the first half, with Tau and Themba Zwane combining to open up Benin’s defence.
Khuliso Mudau volleyed home a loose ball in the box at close range for 2-0 at the break.
South Africa lost their attacking rhythm after the restart, and Benin pulled a goal back on a counter with 20 minutes of regulation time left to play.
Steve Mounie provided an accurate finish beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to halve the deficit.
The Cheetahs enjoyed a spell of dominance, but South Africa gradually reasserted control through possession of the ball and secured a three-point haul, taking them to the top of group C.
The teams will return to group C action on Tuesday 21 November, with South Africa visiting Rwanda in Butare and Benin facing Lesotho in Durban.
