Chelsea’s attack was weak, with Joao Felix, Mudryk Mykhaylo, and Kai Havertz as center forward. Aston Villa scored in the 18th minute through Ollie Watkins, giving them a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Chelsea were unable to find their way into the second half, so Aston Villa scored their second goal in the 56th minute through John McGinn, who was assisted by Ramsey, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. Chelsea substituted Madueke, Kante, and Pulisic for Cheek, Mudryk, and Marc Cucurella but were unable to score a consolation goal.
Following their 2-1 victory, Aston Villa surpassed Fulham to take ninth place in the new EPL table with 41 points, while Chelsea fell to eleventh place with 38 points.
