Godswill Akpabio, former Minister of the Niger Delta and ex-governor of Akwa Ibom State, has defeated Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, former governor of Zamfara State, in the contest for Senate President in the 10th Assembly.
Senator Ali Ndume proposed Akpabio’s nomination for Senate President, presenting a full biography of the former governor of Akwa Ibom.
Senator Ishaku Abbo, on the other side, nominated Senator Abdul Aziz Yari for the prestigious post.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) had declared the South-South region as the rightful occupant of the Senate President seat in the 10th Assembly, with Senator Godswill Akpabio as their favored candidate. Senator Jubrin Barau of the North West was also appointed.
Senator Jubrin Barau of the North West was chosen as the preferred candidate for the office of deputy Senate President.
However, this designation was met with opposition from various parliamentarians, including Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, who was one among the major personalities who opposed the decision.
