Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto, has encouraged Nigerians to pray for the next administration to succeed in directing the country’s affairs.
The Sultan said on Wednesday in Abuja during a roundtable discussion with traditional and religious rulers that everyone should be aware that a new administration would take over on May 29 “whether they like it or not.”
The World Bank arranged the seminar to devise a strategy for increasing human capital development in the country, particularly female child education.

“There must be change because in the next few days or weeks there will be a new government, what can we contribute to that government to stabilize?” said the Sultan, urging attendees not to abandon the advocacy of ending child marriage and other impediments to the growth of the girl when they return to their community.
“Whether anyone likes it or not, a new government is coming on May 29th, so what can we do other than pray because we believe in Almighty, we believe in God who gives and takes?”
So, what happens now? “What can we do to assist the government in stabilizing and moving the country forward?”
He went on to say that it is a chance for religious and traditional leaders to collaborate for the welfare of the country.
“Let us continue to work as one big family with different mothers and fathers or whatever, but Nigeria is our primary father and mother.” As religious leaders, we must ensure equity and justice in all that we do, and that is what I believe we should focus on the most,” Sultan remarked.

“While explaining the efforts that leaders make for the development of their communities,”
“We provide education for thousands of people, but we don’t say anything about it.” This is a forum where an example is provided for individuals to see how others can participate in this. Some of our large men have so much money that I’m not sure what they’ll do with it if they live for 100 or 1,000 years and don’t spend N1 million of it. How can they come out and support, such organizations, groups, and individuals who are investing a lot of money to help our communities?”
“Of course, our health-care system, you know what it is, if a big man has a headache, he goes to London to take Panadol and returns, it is a fact,” he added. So many of our governors built so many clinics that nothing remains but rats in the books, yet it is a truth that you created 1,000 clinics in your state. This is what we’re witnessing.
“I’m not naming names but giving a general opinion, so no governor should come and pick me and say Sultan criticized me.” Nobody is being criticized by me. People should be aware that I am providing a critique as opposed to criticizing. You can criticize an issue so that people would take notice of it.

He also stated that religious and traditional institutions are a pillar of the country’s progressive evolution and must be respected as such.
“We are the most respected religious and traditional leaders, and nothing can change that.” That is why political candidates come to our palaces to ask for our prayers. I’m sure many of our colleagues here have seen politicians vying for Senate President or Speaker of the House visit your palaces or comfort zones and say, “Pray for me that I am the best candidate.”
“Because we see this every day, these institutions are the most visible and productive for anyone who wants to be in a place where he wants to be.”
