Following Eric Mathoho’s departure from Kaizer Chiefs, more players could follow suit before the start of the new season.
After 11 years of outstanding service, Mathoho bid farewell to Amakhosi, and other players struggling for game time, particularly those whose contracts expire at the end of this month, could join him.
Itumeleng Khune and Khama Billiat are two marquee players on that list who have fought for playing time and whose contracts will expire this month, but there are rumors that they may be handed new contracts.
Sowetan looks at five players that could be offloaded by the club:
Dube, Thabani
Dube struggled for playing time during the previous season, appearing in only one game for the team. Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe’s presence will push him even lower in the pecking order, forcing him to find a new home. The 30-year-old joined Amakhosi from Richards Bay in 2021 under coach Stuart Baxter but struggled in the 2022/2023 season, despite making 16 appearances in his maiden season.
Mahlatsi, Kamohelo
Mduduzi Mdantsane’s arrival will further limit Mahlatsi’s game time, since he was already battling to make the starting XI this season. Mahlatsi, 24, joined Amakhosi from Swallows at the start of the season and has appeared in seven games in all competitions.
Bimenyimana, Caleb-Bonfils Caleb-Bonfils Caleb-Bonfils
Bimenyimana had a dismal season despite being the Amakhosi’s leading goal scorer this season, with eight goals in all competitions. The Burundian international made 21 appearances for the Glamour Boys, scoring his only goal this season in the Nedbank Cup round of 16 against Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars. Rumour has it that the Chiefs will let the 25-year-old leave before the start of the next season.
Alexander Cole
The 33-year-old midfielder has made seven appearances for the club in all competitions, and with his contract about to end this month, word is that he is no longer in Amakhosi’s plans for the upcoming season.
Bad New For Kaizer Chiefs This June
Nange Phathutshedzo
Nange began well when he was signed from Stellenbosch at the start of 2021/2022, a season in which he played 24 league games under Baxter, but he has battled injuries this season and appeared low on confidence in his five league and cup appearances. The 31-year-old midfielder is still wanted by SuperSport United.
