Gab Marcotti is not a Chelsea correspondent, but he is an expert on the Blues and frequently attends games at Stamford Bridge.
Following his rocky start at the club, Graham Potter concluded that the Blues had “one of the worst transfer windows ever” in the summer.
He stated that the club became weaker as a result of their summer moves, both in terms of the players they sold and the players they bought. That is not what a new coach needs to make a good first impression.
This isn’t meant to excuse Potter, who has made mistakes of his own; rather, it’s meant to contextualize his difficulties. And Gab is correct in everything he says.
That doesn’t excuse the coach’s mistakes, but it does remind you that he’s working with a group that was flawed before injury took away key players.
