Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has suggested that Chelsea risk losing midfielder Enzo Fernandez if things don’t improve under new boss Mauricio Pochettino. Fernandez, signed for £106.7 million in January, was just off the back of an exceptional World Cup with Argentina. After six months at Benfica, he earned his big move to Chelsea, where he continues to impress.
Despite his ability, the side has not picked up their own form. This summer, the central ranks have been added again with Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia joining for their own fees. Fernandez has shown plenty of ability to create for his teammates, but chances haven’t necessarily been taken. After four games, the Blues have just four points to show for their work under new boss Pochettino.
Merson has warned Chelsea that Fernandez could soon look to depart the club if he doesn’t get the support from around him. He believes that Chelsea have brought in a million players and that they have bought too many players that are the same.
It suggests that while others are still taking time to adjust, Fernandez is already at the level to which he can impress at the top. It remains to be seen how the project will progress from this point on, with plenty of hits and misses expected from their transfer policy.
