Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is among the managers calling for games to be canceled. Chelsea had asked that their league match against Wolves be postponed, but the match was played on Sunday as scheduled, and a reduced Chelsea squad was only able to earn a point.
The Premier League has opted against suspending games this Christmas after a meeting with teams on Monday to discuss how best to cope with the current coronavirus issue. Representatives from every top-flight team met via Zoom to examine the potential of delaying a round of matches during the holiday season to stop the spread of Covid-19 infections.
Some teams recommended deferring the games set for December 28-30 to a later date, but the majority of clubs, according to The Athletic, believed it was a dangerous tactic and decided to go on. The Premier League is opposed to any postponement since it would be financially detrimental to the league, and the fixture calendar is already overburdened, causing substantial issues for clubs that have already had numerous matches postponed.
Individual matches will continue to be postponed on a case-by-case basis, as they have been, rather than a blanket postponement, according to the meeting’s broad consensus.
Meanwhile, the Premier League has informed teams of the minimum number of players required for a match to be postponed. It was discovered that a game can be played with 13 outfield players and one goalkeeper, and teams have been encouraged to use their young players more at this time.
However, Chelsea take on Aston Villa this weekend on Sunday, in order to boost their points in the EPL table and they maintain back their previous position in the EPL.
